Car Project
or
How I learned to Run Out of Money! Each student will be allotted an imaginary amount of money with which to purchase, license, insure, and maintain an automobile. The amount of money each will receive will be determined by a toss of dice upon a desk by the student. The amount will be between $5,000 and $10,000.
With this money they will "buy" an automobile that they find in a newspaper, an ad from somewhere, a "Wheels and Deals" or ?????? My only rules are that it must be a car or a truck, it must be real, and it cannot be currently owned in real life by a neighbor, a friend, or a relative.
After the purchase has been made the student will have to purchase insurance, and then license plates and excise tax. When finished with that, and a few small repairs, they will be able to "enjoy the fruits of carefree motoring".
The students learn to write checks, balance check books, figure sales tax as well as several other life skills. They also learn the value of bargain shopping and how important it is to read ads carefully. We all have a great time, but usually the adults in the room have much more fun than the children!
This project will not receive a grade itself, but I will give a grade for a project that will be done the week we return from Christmas Vacation. The requirements and grading scale for the project can be found at: http://www.unionville.mccsc.edu/rubric.html
This project needs to be completed on posterboard or something similar. It may be done over break, during the first week back and is due Wednesday after we return from vacation. Questions may be emailed to me at dshields@mccsc.edu or phoned at 332-0175.
